Giving in the dark
Every scholarship provider faces the same blind spot. When a student applies, you rarely know whether they already receive support somewhere else.
So it happens both ways. Some students receive more than they need, from several organisations at once. Others who need help just as much go without, because the funds went elsewhere.
The obvious fix would be for organisations to check with each other. But that would mean sharing students’ identities between organisations, which no one can do, and no student should have to accept.
FairShare is the way to check without sharing.
Your data stays yours
We do not keep personal information about your students.
When you check a student, you type their ID number. We never store it in a form anyone can read. It is protected the moment it enters the system, and no other organisation ever sees it. Not other providers. Not us.
What you get back is simple: does this student already receive support somewhere else? You see that there is an overlap, and the type and value of it. You never see who the student is to another organisation.
The student’s identity never travels. Only the fact of the overlap does.
This is how we meet Sri Lanka’s data protection rules.
How it works
- Enter a student’s ID to check them before you award.
- The ID is protected before anything is stored or checked. The real number is never kept.
- The network checks for a match using only the protected version.
- You get your answer. Whether the student already gets support, what kind, and how much. Never their identity elsewhere.
Three answers, one clear picture
Every check gives you one of three answers, and each helps you decide.
Already supported.
The student receives support from other organisations. You see how much and what kind, so you can decide whether to add to it, or direct your funds to someone with greater need.
Support paused.
The student has support recorded, but it is currently suspended. A paused award is a different situation from a live one, and it may be exactly why the student has come to you.
No support found.
No organisation is supporting this student. You can give with confidence, knowing your help reaches someone who is not already covered.
In every case, you see the support, never the student’s identity elsewhere.
Privacy is the foundation, not a feature
Most systems collect data first and protect it afterwards. FairShare is built the other way round. The protection comes first, and it shapes everything else.
One door for identity.
A student’s ID number enters the system in only one place, when you check. There is no second way in, so there is one carefully watched entrance rather than many.
Protected before it is used.
The moment you enter an ID, it becomes a protected fingerprint. The network matches on the fingerprint, never the real number, and the real number is never stored. Even we cannot read it back.
Consent before recording.
You cannot record a scholarship without certifying the student consented. We never hold the consent document itself, it stays with you, but the system will not proceed without it.
A permanent, tamper-evident record.
Every check and every record is logged in a way that cannot be quietly changed or deleted. If a decision is ever questioned, there is an honest record of exactly what happened.

Common questions
Do you store our students’ ID numbers?
No. The ID number is protected the moment it is entered and is never stored in a readable form. We keep only a protected fingerprint, which cannot be turned back into the original number.
Can other organisations see our students?
No. When you check a student, you learn only whether they are supported elsewhere and how much. You never see the student’s identity with another organisation, and they never see yours.
Who can join?
Organisations that provide scholarships or student support in Sri Lanka, and that pass our review against the FairShare Charter.
Do we have to get consent from students?
Yes. You must have the student’s consent before you check or record them, and you certify that consent in the system. We provide wording you can use, but the consent record stays with you. We never hold it.
What if we make a mistake in a record?
Records can be corrected through a proper, logged process. Because the network is shared, corrections are handled carefully rather than by silent deletion, so the record stays honest.
